About this Spot
Lakeside Park includes the entire Northern part of Lake Merritt.
Trash Note
Trash is a mix of litter and campsite detritus.
Avoid cleaning active campsites unless you talk to the residents and get guidance from residents about what can be taken away. Potentially needles around homeless campsites.
Hazards & Safety
Watch for both cars and bikes, especially along the bikes paths. Always face traffic when cleaning along a roadway. Always wear a neon vest when working along a roadway. Most campsites welcome respectful cleanup work, but some campsite residents can be hostile. You should work in pairs or small groups around campsites, and please read and absorb our guidelines for working around campsites. There are cliffs on the Southwestern side of the park.
Getting There & Parking
Large parking area.
Trash Disposal
Put bagged trash next to cans. Securely tie bags, with zip ties if available. Wildlife will go after fresh (but rarely old) litter, but tied bags minimizes the issue, and turns a large problem into a small one. For larger amounts (e.g. abandoned campsites) stage trash: at least 50’ from active campsites safely out of the right-of-way where it can be easily and safely loaded into a truck. There is no need to report bagged trash next to cans, but larger amounts should be reported via the Oak311 App or Website Needles should be collected in a plastic bottle with a secure lid and taken to a needle disposal site.
