About this Spot

Eastern side of highway, underneath the University Overpass.

It's best to join an organized cleanup, before working solo in this area.

Trash Note

Most of the litter is abandoned campsites, and waste middens from the camps themselves. Trash also blows in from the highway. Dumping, usually construction waste, is also common in this area.

Useful items like wood, poles or other building materials, should be left, or stacked at the edge of trash piles so they can be recovered.

Most active camps have collections of clothes or parts that may appear to be trash, but are still prized. Litter is often mixed in with these collections.

When working near an active camp, talk to residents to get guidance about what can be taken away.

Avoid cleaning active campsites unless you talk to the residents and get guidance from residents about what can be taken away. Potentially needles around homeless campsites.

Hazards & Safety

It's best to join an organized cleanup, before working solo in this area.

• Very fast traffic along Highway exit
• Fast moving bikes on paths
• Stay off offramp and highway, stay off highway paved areas and at least 12' from moving traffic at all times. • Lots of needles in this area.

Getting There & Parking

Park on Second street, under overpass, near Truitt & White warehouses. There is a path underneath the overpass that connects Second Street to the encampment.

Trash Disposal

Caltrans removes trash piles on the first full work week of the month.

Trash piles should be staged off the right-of-way, near the freeway offramp so that it can easily be removed using a bobcat loader.
