About this Spot
There are several encampments at Central hidden in the bushes on the Western side of Hwy 580, South of Central Ave.
There is a second set next to the railroad overpass, accessed via the access road for the businesses on the North side of Central Overpass.
SEE ALSO 80-Central Ave Spot
These encampments have huge amounts of associated trash. In addition, there is significant amounts of litter from traffic on the Central Ave. overpass.
The ditch along the railroad tracks, is filled with trash and drains directly into Cerrito Creek.
Avoid cleaning active campsites unless you talk to the residents and get guidance from residents about what can be taken away. Potentially needles around homeless campsites.
Hazards & Safety
Wear neon vests when working anywhere near freeway on and off ramps.
Stay off highway and on and off-ramps.
Stay at least 12’ from traffic lanes.
Do not cross Central anywhere near the interchanges - it’s too busy and too confusing for drivers.
Needles are common around campsites.
Getting There & Parking
Park in the Central Ave. extension to the North of the Overpass.
Stage the trash were it can be easily loaded into a truck, out of the right-of-way.
The areas along the railroad right-of-way are responsibility of Union Pacific Railroad, however UP is an absentee landlord, and not very responsive. You can report trash piles by calling: 1-888-877-7267
The areas under the overpasses, and around the interchange are all Caltrans land. You can report trash piles using their online reporting too
The adjacent city streets in this area are the responsibility of the City of Richmond. Report trash piles by calling (510) 965-4905 - they also have a ‘City of Richmond’ App for this which is more convenient.
