Untrash University Ave - NEW Time 2:30

We'll be staging from the Seabreeze Cafe parking lot on University.  Our focus will be the encampment, and some touch-up under the pedestrian bridge on Bayshore trail. Cleaning University Ave heading West into the Marina is also an option. The people in the camp have been welcoming, and grateful.

About the Event

The forecast is for dry weather.

To get there Drive West on University Ave. over the freeway overpass, and take a Left onto Frontage Rd. Then take an immediate Right into the parking lot behind the Seabreeze Cafe.

Our primary focus will be untrashing the encampment, along with some touch-up work under the pedestrian overpass where it crosses the Bayshore Trail. For those who would rather not work on the encampment, other options will be to untrash the beach to the West of Seabreeze, as well as litter along University heading West into the marina.

Earlier, I ran into several groups of social workers who regularly visit the encampment, none of whom expressed concerns about safety, and they described the encampement as friendly. I also met several people who live there, and all were grateful and welcoming.

South-West Encampment Area

Our focus will be cleaning up the burned area and the 'entrance' area (the corner near University and Frontage) as well as touch up work across the area we just cleaned. After we clean the entrance area, we will install new trash cans to mitigate future trashing; I am working on setting up informal trash service, and hope to hire one of the locals to empty these cans on a daily basis into the dumpster across the road on University.

Hazards

  • Speeding Cars. STAY OFF HIGHWAY PAVEMENT Always face traffic when working along roads.
  • Needles. Wear sturdy footware, and never put needles into trash - we have special sharps containers for needles.
